Antonio Ortega - Vice-Chairman of the Management Committee
Antonio "Tony" Ortega is a seasoned business executive and strategic investor whose career and investments have spanned the hospitality, insurance, real estate, entertainment, private aviation and medical device industries.
After six successful years on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of Grupo VIPS in Spain, a major hospitality conglomerate, Ortega left the corporation and moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico to run the family business, Property Insurance Corporation, as it's President. In the intervening 15 years, Ortega has grown the business from $4,000,000 in premiums to over $60,000,000. In the process, he has extended the product line to include all types of insurance and became the largest writer of several lines of coverage in Puerto Rico. He also formed insurance companies, InsuranSmart Insurance Company and Best American Insurance Company of Puerto Rico to write coverage directly Most recently Ortega has created a joint venture with LandAmerica Financial Group. He created a revolutionary Homeowner's Insurance program in all 50 states taking advantage of their infrastructure, and leveraging their Title Insurance relationships into another profitable line of business.
In the last ten years Ortega has also been involved in Real Estate development in Puerto Rico, being responsible for building over 500 individual homes and condominium housing units. He is also a partner in Lema Development, a firm which is active in commercial Real Estate, such as Caribe Village, a joint venture with Hilton International, among the largest condo hotels in the Caribbean. He also has substantial interests in Real Estate in the states of Florida, New York and Wyoming. In the latter he is President and CEO of Tatanka Development, through which considerable land has been acquired in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Ortega also has a participation in Omega Real Estate, AVO Consulting Group, Puerto Rico Diagnostics, Inc., Atlantic SAC Real Estate Company, Blue Star Jets, Acrescent Financial Group, and the Ritz Carleton of Key Biscayne. He is the co-founder and controlling investor in Pension Benefit Insurance Services, Inc, a New Jersey insurance unit with multiple patents pending, which are directly applicable to the $2.2 trillion U.S. defined contribution pension market.
Although he was born in Miami, Florida and is a U.S. citizen, his parents are both political exiles from Cuba. He is a graduate of a British secondary school, Runnemeade College. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing Management from Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts and a MBA from the University of Miami.
